Dear friends, creatives and Jacob Krueger Studio alumni! As this is my first post in 2022, I would like to wish all of you Happy New Year! May 2022 be blissful to you in all areas of your life! I’ve been talking about archetypes lately. As I would like to discover new ways of sharing my work with you, in the sense of emphasizing on the social and community aspects of social networks, I decided to start the New Year by extending the discussion on archetypes and embracing the Platonic concept of pure form. Based on Wikipedia there goes the following:
“The concept of an archetype (from Greek: άρχω, 'to begin' + τύπος, 'sort, type') appears in areas relating to behavior, historical psychology, and literary analysis. An archetype can be:
1.) a statement, pattern of behavior, prototype, "first" form, or a main model that other statements, patterns of behavior, and objects copy, emulate, or "merge" into. Informal synonyms frequently used for this definition include "standard example," "basic example," and the longer-form "archetypal example;" mathematical archetypes often appear as "canonical examples."
2.) the Platonic concept of pure form, believed to embody the fundamental characteristics of a thing.
3.) a collectively-inherited unconscious idea, a pattern of thought, image, etc., that is universally present, in individual psyches, as in Jungian psychology
4.) a constantly-recurring symbol or motif in literature, painting, or mythology. This definition refers to the recurrence of characters or ideas sharing similar traits throughout various, seemingly unrelated cases in classic storytelling, media, etc. This usage of the term draws from both comparative anthropology and from Jungian archetypal theory.
Archetypes are also very close analogies to instincts, in that, long before any consciousness develops, it is the impersonal and inherited traits of human beings that present and motivate human behavior. They also continue to influence feelings and behavior even after some degree of consciousness developed later on.”
Remember talking about the necessity of not only aligning with the ambitious analyses in blogs and social networks but also in a professional piece of art? There goes Plato, talking about the concept of form! Before I personalize these concepts on my own, let me describe what the concept of form is all about.
Wikipedia so far:
“The theory of Forms or theory of Ideas is a philosophical theory, concept, or world-view, attributed to Plato, that the physical world is not as real or true as timeless, absolute, unchangeable ideas. According to this theory, ideas in this sense, often capitalized and translated as "Ideas" or "Forms", are the non-physical essences of all things, of which objects and matter in the physical world are merely imitations. Plato speaks of these entities only through the characters (primarily Socrates) of his dialogues who sometimes suggests that these Forms are the only objects of study that can provide knowledge. The theory itself is contested from within Plato's dialogues, and it is a general point of controversy in philosophy. Nonetheless, the theory is considered to be a classical solution to the problem of universals (Should the properties an object has in common with other objects, such as color and shape, be considered to exist beyond those objects?)
The early Greek concept of form precedes attested philosophical usage and is represented by a number of words mainly having to do with vision, sight, and appearance. Plato uses these aspects of sight and appearance from the early Greek concept of the form in his dialogues to explain the Forms and the Good. …
… The pre-Socratic philosophers, starting with Thales, noted that appearances change, and began to ask what the thing that changes "really" is. The answer was substance, which stands under the changes and is the actually existing thing being seen. The status of appearances now came into question. What is the form really and how is that related to substance?”
Explainability and analyses on the definitions make my goal of giving vision and being at pieces of art quite apparent as long as we draw a logical path towards “applying” (it’s the application that matters) archetypes and forms into an idea. So let us discuss all about that now!
Here's where we go beyond Plato’s and Jung’s theories and definitions to first of all seek meaning in our own works.
Well, it’s known to many writers and creatives that in pure literature you write a script and that’s just it. A script. But in theater and cinema there’s always the backend script. This means that from the very moment we’re dealing with the approvals of directors, actors and entertainment industry executives, we have to think exponentially. I’ve been watching TV movies these days! The first of it, Enchanted Christmas, deals with a character that from the very moment the star realizes his youthful love has come to his town to refurbish a hotel he’s giving dance recitals, a series of events take place up until the character decides to get past the hunting of other dreams and focus on what truly matters. I repeat. Get past of the hunting of other dreams and… etc. In screenwriting, the conscious writing sample is a tiny percentage of our entire subconscious thoughts. Characters’ wants are structured around tons of emotions and experiences up until we reach the depths of core DNAs.
But which are the characters’ wants anyway? All characters can be structured around prime emotional needs and theory of screenwriting suggests these prime emotional needs are five: love, comfort, validation, respect, justice. Love should not be confused with comfort and validation should not be confused with respect. For example, how often these days is the offsetting of emotions with living rooms… Or individuals say, “I believe you can dress better…” I say OK to your dressing code, meaning I respect but I don’t validate it. Or individuals say “You tried hard for this painting…” I validate it is hard work but I don't respect.
In both cases of oral language, here there’s the underlying tone of the individual that gives the interpretations stated above. What do you get from the above? That the singular black or white model of thought is not sufficient. No matter if you love, validate or respect, who cares? There’s more to it. Hollywood readers made me think of the backend script I mentioned above as well as the spectrum around the prime emotional needs that deals with what I stated above about the subconscious. The fact that all experiences, events and tons of emotions should be subject to test, diversity and change before we reach these superficial surfaces of the labels. The fact that writers have to build a spectrum around these prime emotional needs and wants.
Character wants exist in every scene. They can be accomplished, rejected or interrupted for later evolution! But when it comes to believable and well-developed casts, writes have to develop the entire tree of emotions, secondary experiences, backstories, etc, before they align to the 5-dimensional umbrella. And here’s where the unification with archetypes and forms unfolds…! In archetypes we talk about patterns, first forms, prototypes or concepts. And in forms or else ideas, we seek for the timeless, absolute and unchangeable. So, here’s where we have come to the clue that as long as we discover the appropriate thinking, black or white may not be that black or white after all. Unless someone tries to deliberately “hit a model” as I have stated in previous articles, an idea and a form should survive as long as we, creators, know where we’re getting into, getting past the delay with other ideas. And of course, there are paradoxes in that!
All writers want to get lost into creative writing stories… This means they will confront their thoughts, their visions, their creative inspirations and the reality of their art and their creative arsenal so that we can pass from the small form towards the big form. For many of us, it’s true that we are masterminds in small forms. But what happens at the reality of an escalation?
This is where the above reality of “hitting a model” or not at all, comes to life… Towards a journey of self-awareness, competition as well as creativity, words have value. If I say, I write about Hollywood stars or an Oscaric character, or youth that goes after the dream of fame and fortune, it may take two or three conscious expressions to describe it but it may take piles of writing and analysis to reach that creative standard in terms of a final idea. It’s the idea that words have power. Words matter, it may be 7 or 8 letters but the concept behind them knows that art is big and we are not allowed to draw it down to our level. So, here’s how the fantasy of the mind mingles with the fantasy of literature. The thought that to actually develop these archetypes, forms and visions structured around prime emotional needs, there’s hard work that had to be done. So, if we have to fix our lives first before we start daydreaming about these realities or illusions for many people, then let it be! Have a great time folks!
